Staying indoors using Facebook

April is coming to an end, Labor day tomorrow. Do you know that labor day in US is on September 1?? I know this is so random.

My favorite networking site is Facebook. I started using it after my 18th birthday last year. What a great gift to myself!

I use it mainly for networking as in to add friends, add application, join groups, become fan. I know for the past few days I have been becoming fans of a few singers/musicians. I also found out which friends are fans of those artist I like.

Other than that, I use it to chat with friends by writing on their wall. Recently, I have been writing back and forth on Simon's wall about American Idol season 7.

An application on facebook you must add is Farmwars, it's created by my friend studying in NUS for her project. So you must add it to show support. Actually, the game is a combination of Harvest Moon and Warbook but it's more like Harvest Moon.

Well, facebook is used mostly by my english-speaking friends. I have a mixture of english-speaking and mandarin-speaking friends.

Someone once told me that networking is important especially in the business line. So one way to network is through social networking sites like Facebook. Another way to do networking is by attending events where you can meet people with similar interest. I think you can find plenty online or in newspapers, it's just that whether you want to go or not.

My college is having CIMA conference but the problem is the word conference. Whenever people mention the word conference, I would always think of sitting in a big hall, listening to people talk. Well, isn't that what a real conference is like?

The conference in my college is not about that, it's more of playing games especially treasure hunt that it has created a bit of diseconomies of scale. Diseconomies of scale happens when increased production cause lower output. In this case, I attended 2 ACCA conference last year, both did the same thing, we played treasure hunt. So if I attend a 3rd one, eventhough it is CIMA conference but a rose by any other name smells the same. So the conferences would be the production and my response to it is the output.

I'll probably make new friends, expand my network, but won't enjoy myself. I'll complain a lot after the event and I wouldn't gain much compared to attending a bona fide conference.

Hoc Mun, maybe you're right. I think I'm a homey. I don't like being outdoors so much. I can't stand the weather, it's so cooling inside and you won't get skin cancer so why bother going outside and expose yourself to so much free radicals?

At the end of the day, it depends where I'm going to. Lifehouse or Lee Hom concert, I'm interested. Movies like Narnia, shopping, I'll be so ready to go. But camping and other outdoor activities where you have to spend long hours under the sun, I would think twice and see if my friends are going, if they are, most probably I would go. I would also have to see the cost involve whether tangible or intangible.

3 weeks semester break

Things I plan to do or will be doing for the whole 3 weeks of my semester break
  1. Work part-time. Just to earn some income since I've never earned a single cent before, not including the interest earned from saving money in the bank. And since Hoc Mun called me a homey, just to prove him wrong. I also want to get some work experience.
  2. Learn to play the guitar. A good way to release stress during stressful study periods and to serenade to my future husband. LOL. He's gonna be the luckiest person on earth.
  3. Study economics. I want to study deeper, like consumerism, market prices, those sort of stuff. When I was in Form 4, I wanted to be an economist because I like that subject so much.
  4. Learn more about the enviroment. I just learned some from cnn.com, I learned about green funeral and desertification.
  5. Explore other music genres like new age and techno.
  6. Read books. I'm currently reading The case for faith by Lee Strobel.
  7. Update my contacts database. Something which I have been procastinating but something I have to do because I have new contacts and some of them changed their phone numbers and all that.

That's about all for now. Every semester break I will create a list of things to do but only do some of it. Haiz. A successful person needs to be discipline.

My fave Reliant K song

I started listening to Reliant K only few months back. This is my favorite song. It's a love song. I like the lyrics. A really good love song to sing to a girl if you're not into ballads, now wouldn't that be a nice change? Do you believe in true love? I do. I think the best thing would be to tell each other every day that you love him/her.

Using Google

Do you know that Google is more than just a search engine? This is what I found out during my free time.

You can actually use Google for a lot of things. One, is of course as a search engine. I always use Google first to find the information I need.

Second, you can use Google to blog. Blogspot actually belongs to Google. So for all those without the old blogger account, you need to have a gmail account to sign up.

Third, you can use Gmail to send emails to friends. I don't know when exactly have I started using Gmail but it was a long time ago, when I was still in light blue pinafore studying in SMK Taman SEA. I got invited by Andrew, and at that time, the invites were limited unlike now. Oh, Gmail also just started at that time, not many people heard of it yet. It wasn't as user-friendly back then compared to now, there weren't so many extras like labels, chat either. Yeah, I use Gmail to chat with my friends who also has a gmail account, which is still a small number because I think not many people are aware that they can use gmail to chat.

There is also labels which is similar to folders, it helps me group certain mails together. I receive newsletter from ACCA, so I use this function to group all email from ACCA together. Whenever I have the time to read it, I'll click on this label and it will display all mails from ACCA.

Fourth, Google calendar, which I just learned how to use. Very user-friendly and convenient. Now I can use it to organize and manage my time, very much like a management diary except that this is a paperless version. I can let it remind me of events and I can invite my friends to events using Google calendar.

Next, there's Google documents which I haven't tried out yet. It's like Microsoft Office except that now you can do your work offline/online.

I think there are probably more but I haven't discover it yet. I hope that those at Google would come up with something to help me manage my expenses and also a to-do list.

All these tools would be good, especially if we want to save the earth by going paperless.

From where you are

This song was specially written and performed by Jason Wade to support Allstate's teen safe driving program which is to educate parents and teens on the risks associated with teen driving.

Well, I know teens can be reckless at times on the road, I have sat in my friend's cars before and some of them drive recklessly, it's just God's grace that we didn't get into an accident. I may not have the exact numbers of how many teens that "go out for a drive...and never come back" and the newspapers can't report every single accident involving teens but I would like to remind my friends, to drive safely. Do you want your life or the "high" you get from driving recklessly?

One World, One Dream

I want to save time so I just put the song here instead of emailing the link to my friend. In case you don't realize, Olympics this year will be held in Beijing in August. I think they are still in the process of choosing the song. 5 songs has been shortlisted. I like the one by Wang Lee Hom titled One World, One Dream. It captures the Olympic Spirit. Anyway, there are others like the one by Jay Chou but I don't like his voice in that song.

Please don't kill the music

My friend ask me to try listening to this band. Since two of my friends like this band so much, I thought they must be good. So I listen to a few of their songs. They were singing the cover for Lee Hom's Forever Love and 安全感(an quan gan). I think they killed both the songs. They need to listen to Lee Hom's advice, they definitely need more practice. It seems easy to enter the music industry nowadays, even if you lack talent but have good looks, people will still buy your albums, download your songs, become your fans and all that. This is sad.

Having my finals next Saturday. Only one paper for this semester. Then I can enjoy, anyway, I plan to work part-time.

Malaysia Boleh!

I was going through the list of The World's 2000 Largest Public Companies and was so happy, well it's more like proud to see 14 Malaysian companies listed there among the 2000 companies. Yes, I was that patient to go through the whole list.

Majority of the companies are US companies but there's a good number of companies from Asia.

Advice from Lee Hom

In case you didn't notice, on the right, there are links to websites of my favorite celebrities or personalties. Those are their official website.

Today, I decided to visit Lee Hom's website just to take a break from all that studying. I admire a lot of things about Lee Hom. He's a great singer.

He wrote an article on practising and working hard. I can't disagree. Even though he was talking about singing, I think it applies to everybody else, no matter what field you're in. I realized, the more I practice, the better I get. The harder I work, the easier it gets. Just like Management Accounting Fundamentals, a super tough subject I took last semester, it was my weakest subject, now I understand it well because I faced my weakness. I tried past year question and any question related to the topic I'm doing. From my getting the lowest grades among all the other subject, it became the one with the highest grade during my finals.

I just kept practicing, practicing until I'm good at it. Of course to be good in something, you have to sacrifice something. There's always the opportunity cost. For me, it's computer time, nap time. Besides, I have not been watching much TV lately, other than watching American Idol, I don't watch anything else on TV.

Of course, I won't see the results overnight. It takes time, it takes patience.

All the best to my friends preparing for finals.

P.S. click on this post title to get to Lee Hom's article.

Accounting Night

Accounting Night was held on 10 April, in TAR college Sports Complex. For those of you who didn't attend this event, too bad. You don't know what you missed out. I believe for RM12 only, what the audience get in return was definitely more than that. The food was good, even though I only got to eat leftover chicken after the event.

It was raining but it didn't spoil the event. People still came, there was also some who bought tickets just before the event was about to start. The event was super massive.

My ex-chairperson was predicting that the refreshment was going to be messy but the opposite happened.

Anyway, back to me, the person who did my hair and make up did it very well. I like it very much as it suits me. Even the emcee praised my hair! A lot other people praised my hair/make up too.

I was backstage throughout the whole event and there was this huge screen for us to watch what's going on at the front. I also mingled with the performers and made new friends with them. They are really friendly people, really nice people to be with. I also got to do something, I bet not many get to do, be up close with a celebrity - Karen Kong, a local singer. I escorted her from her car and accompanied her while she was backstage. I even got to talk to her. Hehe.

The whole Sports complex was packed that night, and thank God, we got many praises from the audience, so glad they enjoyed it even though there were some things that didn't go as planned. There was more positive than negative.

We had a fashion show by our own audience. Then we have performances by finalist for other competitions held in my college. Not forgetting Karen Kong and an Indian who can sing Cantonese songs. Overall, I would rate that event as the greatest event ever in my college!

We started from zero and ended up with some thing this good. We surely did create history and set a benchmark for all events like this held by other societies.

Oh Nature!

Yesterday afternoon, I was in college for booth duty when it stated raining like cats and dogs. Then I heard something like things dropping on the roof so I went to check it out and guess what, I saw ice falling from the sky. Serious, this is not an April Fool's joke. I wished I had taken some photos of it as I don't witness this so often. The last time it happened was when I was in primary school.

Today, I saw the sun setting and it was like a great, red ball. I didn't say big. I said great. Hard to describe it in words. Again wished I had a camera or at least a camera phone so that I can show you the pictures.

Now, who wants to sponsor me a camera phone?
